Abstract : With changes in local regulations, seismic design and retrofitting of buildings have become a key topic in construction fraternity. We have basic design guidelines in place for primary structures. These guidelines arereviewed and modified periodically to incorporate the latest findings. However, there is little to no guidance on seismic design of post-installed anchor connections for fixing secondary structures/ service utilities. Post-installed anchoring systems have become an integral part of modern construction world and are used for a wide variety of structural and non-structural applications. In addition to significant monetary loss, any damage to these systems can interrupt the supply of critical services in the event of earthquake. There is a dire need to address evaluation and design of post-installed anchoring systems in local regulations. This paper discusses behavior of these systems under seismic loads andpresents a review of relevant international guidelines. In conclusion, the paper highlights the shortcomings in Indian Standards with respect to evaluation and design of post-installed anchoring systems.
