Abstract :  Since late 1990s, India is witnessing a construction boom. High-rise buildings, metro railways, highway bridges/intersections, etc. use large number of precast pretensioned concrete (PTC) elements. The shear capacity of PTC elements can be influenced by their transmission length (Lt) and development length (Ld). This paper compares the equations for Lt and Ld provided in various national and international codes (by agencies such as BIS, IRC, ACI, AASHTO EN 2, and FIB). It has been found that, the formulations provided in ACI 318 (2014) and AASHTO (2007) for predicting Lt and Ld are more conservative than those provided in IS 1343 (2012), IRC 112 (2011), EN 2 (2004) and fib-MC (2010). This paper also provides findings from a case study performed on the shear capacity of a typical highway bridge girder in India. It was found that the ACI 318 (2014) code overestimates and the AASHTO (2007) code underestimates the shear capacity when compared to mechanistic equation whereas, the IS 1343 (2012) and IRC 112 (2011) and mechanistic equation predict similar shear capacity.
