Abstract : As a part of the research study for the benefit of the society, an attempt was made to replace the potable water with effluent from the tannery industry for construction purpose. The mechanical properties such as compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength and the special durability properties such as corrosion studies, chloride attack, sulphate attack and chemical attack were studied by casting various concrete specimens in form of cube, cylinders and beams etc. It was observed that the concrete had some reduction in strength while subjected to corrosion, chloride attack, sulphate attack and chemical attack and to counter act these adverse effects, suitable admixtures were selected and optimized. In this experimental research study, the special durability properties of the concrete such as corrosion studies and sulphate attack were studied by casting various concrete specimens in form of cube, cylinders and beams etc for the longer duration of about 2 years in various intervals of 15 months, 18 months, 21 months and 24 months. It was observed that by the addition of admixtures, the adverse effects due to the usage of the treated and untreated tannery effluent are almost nullified during the longer run.
