Abstract : Due to availability of wide variety of concrete repair materials with wide range of physical, chemical and mechanical properties, it is important to determine true bond strength of the repair materials for a durable concrete repair. The bond strength as calculated by slant shear test procedures is dependent on compressive strength of the substrate concrete. In this paper a new test procedure is developed. The procedure is designed in such a way that the pressure on shear surfaces is more than the pressure on entire substrate concrete. A compressive load on the repair material is applied at top to shear the repair material through three vertical surfaces of the substrate concrete. The bond strength of the repair material is calculated by the compressive load applied and divided by three surface areas of the contact. An analogous specimen of this test procedure was tested in a finite element analysis and observed that the pressures on shear surfaces are more than the pressure on entire substrate concrete. Therefore, the bond strength can be measured successfully in the direct shear test procedure irrespective of the strengths of the repair materials.
