Abstract : High strength concrete was used to build steel reinforced concrete (SRC) columns or steel tubular columns in construction projects of skyscraper. In this paper a C70 self-compacting concrete was prepared. Raw materials, mix proportion and properties of concrete were introduced. Some measurements were studied to decrease the autogenous shrinkage of high strength concrete filled in steel columns. An internal curing with suitable dosage of super adsorbent polymer (SAP) shows much better performance than the use of shrinkage-reducing admixture or shrinkage-compensating concrete prepared with expansive agent. The concrete with SAP shows excellent workability and mechanical properties. Its slump was 240mm, slump flow was 700mm and the flow loss was smaller than 10%. Its autogenous shrinkage decreased two third but its 28d compressive strength only decreased less than 5%. This self-compacting concrete has been used successfully to cast the SRC columns of Shenzhen Pingan Finance Center that will be the highest building of more than 600m in China.
