Abstract : A number of Nondestructive Testing (NDT) techniques are being evaluated to determine the depth of unknown bridge foundations. Three NDT methods were down-selected based on reliability: sonic echo, parallel seismic and electrical induction. The first two are based on sonic wave propagation and will be discussed in this paper. The ‘Induction Method’ is the easiest to apply but only applicable for foundations made of steel or reinforced concrete and will not be discussed here. A brief overview of each technique is followed by results of laboratory/field investigations. Through numerous tests and analyses over the last two years it is possible to provide recommendations on ‘best practice’ and their reliability under different circumstances. Many unique challenges encountered during field tests and proposed solutions are to be outlined.
