Abstract : In past few decades, “integral bridges” have gained wide popularity across the globe as they have many appreciable features due to monolithic connection between the piers and the deck slab. The integral bridges, however, are subjected to additional forces due to temperature variations and their maximum possible length is therefore restricted and governed by the flexibility of the structure and magnitude of the temperature variations in the area i.e. longer bridge length is possible with tall & slender piers and where temperature variations are low or moderate. The present paper describes the salient features, design and construction of the following integral structures constructed in various part of India: 521m long integral bridge over Chakki khad (river) on NH20 in the state of HimachalPradesh. 96m long integral bridge over Chambi khad on NH20 in the state of Himachal Pradesh. 200m long floating (partly integral) flyover on NH37 near Guwahati airport, Assam. Looking at the magnitude of the temperature forces, intermediate expansion joints have been provided in Chakki khad bridge and bearings have been provided over outer piers of the Guwahati airport flyover.
