Abstract : Natural sand, the preferred choice as fine aggregate in concrete, is defined in IS: 383 as ‘fine aggregate resulting from the natural disintegration of rock and which has been deposited by stream or glacial agencies’. Great challenges are being faced in obtaining fine aggregates from natural sources for concrete constructions. There are restrictions on the use of river sand because of environmental and ecological concerns of erosion of soil in the river bed, change in the course of the river and stability of the banks, causing floods etc. IS: 383 also permit use of crushed stone and crushed gravel sand (popularly known as manufactured sand) in concrete. Draft Revisions of IS: 383 (March 2015) take note of the difficulties in obtaining natural sand. The various alternatives to natural sand – crushed rock sand, recycled C&D wastes, coal combustion residues, and other industrial wastes are discussed in this paper.
