Abstract :  The elastic modulus of concrete is primarily related to its compressive strength which in turn is influenced by the properties of its constituents, methods of preparation, curing and design requirements. Elastic behaviour of the principal components of the concrete governs the modulus of the composite material. The characteristics of aggregate, quantity of aggregate, hydrated cement paste and transition zone attribute to the variation of elastic modulus. Based on experimental results, different international codes suggest different empirical relationship between elastic modulus, compressive strength and/or concrete density. Indian Standards propose elastic modulus to be function of only compressive strength of concrete. A review of the E values obtained using these empirical formula with respect to experimental results is done and comparison drawn with international design codes. The results suggest the need for in-depth analysis of the applicability of existing formula for computing elastic modulus incorporating the effect of aggregates and mineral admixtures for normal and high strength concretes in India.
