Abstract : Settlement and stiffness of foundation plays a vital role in the basic assumption of rigid or elastic nature of foundation. Rigidity is based on thickness of the foundation which varies according to soil conditions and modeling methods. Increasing rigidity of soil is however practically difficult and increases cost implication. This paper deals with analytical modeling of Transformer foundation with respect to different type of soil conditions under gravity and lateral loads. The intent of this study is to investigate the rigidity of foundation, variations of the bending moment, shear forces, and deflection under gravity and lateral load in different types of soil conditions.Foundation is modeled similar to Winkler model (1867) forsimulating soilstructure interaction. Bowel’s formula is used to vary the stiffness and hence the soil subgrade reaction. The finite element analysis is carried out using the computational model. Also the observed results are validated with the literature reviewed. The studies performed revealed greater thickness requirements were based on two parameters, namely rigidity andhigher bearing capacity of the soil. The deflection profile showing linearity and non-linearity also helped in understanding the behavior of raft slab as elastic and rigid respectively.
