Abstract : An experimental research was performed using fibers for seismic retrofit of RC columns with insufficient moment capacity and ductility. In pseudo-dynamic test of eight columns with circular cross section, the main test variable was fiber type: none, CF (carbon fiber), GF (glass fiber), PET (polyethylene terephthalate), and combined use of CF/PET or GF/PET. PET has high tensile strength (~600 MPa) and high strain capacity (~15%), but has very low elastic modulus that is smaller than 1/20 of steel. Test results showed that all columns strengthened using any type of fibers had significantly improved strengths and ductility over the control column. Performance of PET-strengthened columns was comparable to that of CF- and GFstrengthened columns while no sign of PET rupture was observed due to excellent strain capacity intrinsic with PET at ultimate stage. The maximum tensile strain PET experienced during test was about7%, much higher than the typical rupture strain values of CF or GF.
