Abstract : India’s housing shortage is estimated to be in excess of 40 million units as of 2010 and demand from the low income segment constitutes a large proportion of this shortage. The expected increase in urban population by 75% in the next 20 years, is going to further add to this shortage and one of the biggest challenges will be providing affordable housing and to be able to create it faster. The construction process in India in housing typically involves construction of beam-column frames, followed by masonry construction, which is then completed with plastering. This process is prominent also in mass housing, which prolongs the completion of such projects, which adds to the housing woes in our country. This necessitates the requirement of a concept for “affordable housing” coupled with speedy construction of these housing units. Many state government authorities have also taken up this task. This construction process is slowly moving towards modular construction, with box type shuttering, which can enable construction of walls and slabs of concrete in one go, hence speeding up the entire process, by eliminating the requirement of any masonry work.
