Abstract : All materials available on earth have vast potential for their utilization for variety of end applications. What could be a waste from certain consideration may be an immensely useful material from some other consideration. It has been seen that a large number of materials which were earlier considered as wastes and source of problem from disposal and environmental point of view, either through experience or as a result of well planned research and development effort have been proved to be very important resource materials. Thus, the problem lies not in any material but essentially in the limitation in understanding the potential characteristic of the material in its raw or modified form. Based on all such experiences with a number of materials and understanding the need for exploiting their potentials, a lot of initiatives have been taken by different agencies in the country and world over for utilization of various wastes with the twin objective of satisfying environmental concerns and effective material utilization. Many of such efforts have been made for last many years for developing techniques for proper disposal of various wastes such as fly ash and slag as also for their optimum positive utilization. With all these efforts and successful application of the same in the field, it would be more appropriate to consider and approach the domain of such materials as “resource materials” rather than waste materials. It is particularly so, as many of these materials can be used with advantage to bring improvements in certain characteristics including in aggressive situations/environment. Today, it is well understood that Standards facilitate crystallization of outcome of research and development activities and experience gained in a particular field for facilitating large scale implementation. The Indian Standards brought out by the Bureau of Indian Standards have played a key-role in giving due recognition to some of the valid technologies for utilization by providing standard specifications and guidelines for these wastes as the resource materials and for their utilization as ingredient into different family of products. The standards have been reviewed and revised from time to time to keep pace with the developments in this field so that updated technical provisions could be made available throughout the country, which are necessary for building confidence level in the minds of users of these materials. This paper while highlighting some of the wastes having potential for effective utilization, gives an insight into the important provisions incorporated in various Indian Standards and the current developments on utilization of wastes in cement, concrete and cement matrix products. All these are with a view to leading towards sustainable construction by triggering, supporting and encouraging large scale effective implementation of waste utilization through Indian Standards.
