Abstract : It is shown that concrete with high levels of fly ash can be produced to have a high strength and good durability. The durability is characterized by permeability and resistance to chloride ion pene- tration. The data show clearly that the compressive strength of control concrete as well as fly ash concrete increases with age. The results show that beyond 90 days the strengths remarkably im- prove for fly ash concretes particularly for higher percentages of replacements. At 180 days and be- yond, concretes with fly ash had much higher strengths than the control concretes, provided proper curing is carried out. There is a drastic reduction in chloride Ion Permeability in the case of Fly Ash Concretes. It has been observed that the permeability reduces as the: •strength increases, •fly ash percentage increase, •age increases. However in the case of plain concrete the permeability reduces as the strength increases, but a defi- nite pattern was not observed as the age increases. Hence, it is concluded that the incorporation of higher volumes of fly ash in concrete can result in both technical and economic benefits and higher levels of fly ash utilization does have high potential for use than those currently being applied in normal concrete constructions.
