Abstract : The construction sector is growing at a rapid speed in India. The construction material mainly concrete is being used extensively for all infrastructure projects in India. The paper brings out the present state of concrete structures and major areas where improvement is needed during its construction and service life stage for sustainable development in India. The specific areas where special attention needs to be given is identified as, utilization of new materials with high-tech improvisation and assessment of structure including use of new materials for maintaining the structures. Further, the paper also highlights the use of special types of concrete and various types of admixtures for both original construction and maintenance for durable concrete Structure. The more durable structures will lead to conservation of the various virgin materials leading to sustainable development in concrete construction. Moreover the concept of utilizing Green building has lot of potential for sustainable development in our country. Further, the deterioration of Reinforced concrete structures is recognized as a major problem worldwide. Apart from requiring regular maintenance, many structures require extensive Repair/Rehabilitation. The requirement of this sort of rehabilitation including strengthening measure is essentially required now more, in view of protecting structures from threat of various calamities including earthquake. How can we meet the today’s needs without diminishing the capacity of future generations to meet their own? A challenge we have to address in construction industry particularly by proper construction and maintenance of structures and by adopting strengthening measures for the existing structures. This has been brought in details in the paper, with an aim for improvement in level of sustainable Development in built environment for long term sustain of life in universe.
