Abstract : The Nuclear Reactor Containment Structure (NRCS) of a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is basically a protection structure against possible radiation fallout due to an accidental high internal pressure in the reactor inside the containment structure or due external causes. The safety of containment structure itself is important against the extreme loading situations such as due to strong earthquake, impact of tsunami waves, high intensity blast and high velocity missile impact. This paper looks into the response of containment structures when such structures are subjected to extreme loadings.
