Abstract : The durability of concrete structures is often governed by the corrosion resistance of the reinforcement, which depends on factors such as the characteristics of the cementitious binder, adequacy of the quality, compaction and curing, of concrete, environmental conditions, etc. It is well known that the durability can be enhanced by incorporating mineral admixtures, like silica fume, fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag to the binder. However, there is still significant reticence in India toward the use of portland pozzolana cements (PPCs) containing fly ash. To provide more confidence about the performance of concretes with fly ash based PPC subjected to chloride corrosion, an extensive study was carried out under uncracked and cracked conditions. Comparisons were made between specimens with the PPC and with ordinary portland cement (OPC), having different water/cement ratios (w/c) and crack widths. This paper reports on the mechanical and durability parameters, as well as the behaviour of the reinforcement subjected to accelerated corrosion.
