Abstract : Concrete structures of national importance, such as, Bridges, Fly overs, Power plants, and others, are to be essentially built with utmost care to realise their full Service life without much recurring expenditure on maintenance. The experience so far has been that many of the structures have undergone distress during their service life, compelling the authorities to carry out repairs and rehabilitation involving considerable expenditure, to enhance their Service life. The causes of distress can be attributed to many factors, of which the important being the poor quality construction, improper detailing of reinforcement and not satisfying the requirements as specified in the Codes of Practice, particularly with respect to the durability against the environmental effects on concrete. However, these should be implemented and care should be taken by exercising higher degree of quality control measures, during all the phases of construction. But in practice, for various reasons, high degree of quality control measures is generally not achieved. In this connection, it is pertinent to understand the types of distress normally encountered, parameters influencing the distress, and the preventive measures to be undertaken during the design/construction phase, and later, to achieve the durability in respect of concrete structures.
