Abstract : Surface-impregnation materials and coating agents would be effective in maintaining the authenticity of historical reinforced concrete buildings. This study investigates the effect of the surface-impregnation materials and coating agents in preventing the moisture and gas ingress into concrete. The following results were obtained: (1) The surface-impregnation materials did not change the appearance of the concrete and did not prevent the progress of carbonation either. (2) The surface-coating agents changed the appearance of the concrete, but they did have a significant effect on the prevention of carbonation. (3) A good agreement was found between air permeability and carbonation progress; however, the correlation between moisture content and air permeability was poor. It would, therefore, be necessary to develop other methods to prevent the effects of moisture ingress.
