Abstract : This paper reports on the degradation of concrete structures on Gunkan-Island in Japan. Visual inspection indicates that the causes of the degradation are inherent salinity and salt spray for long years. The chloride-ion content in concrete was detected by the EPMA analysis. According to the analysis, the maximum content of chloride reached up to 38 kg/m3 and that salt concentration was found to be a secondary cause of the degradation.
