Abstract : Historical mortar samples from the late 18th C. in Srirangapatna, a town near Mysore in southern India, were evaluated for their mineralogical and morphological characteristics. The mortar specimens were sampled from three sites and examined using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and chemical analysis to detail their current chemical composition and grain size information. The results show that these are lime-based mortars with significant MgO content. Additionally, the results confirm that strands of natural fibres most likely derived from animal sources were used in one of the sites as fibre reinforcement.
