Abstract : Identification of seismically vulnerable buildings within the existing building stock in urban area is the most important task for taking essential corrective measures such as rehabilitation and restoration of buildings prior to probable seismic events. The detailed analysis of existing building is very difficult, expensive and time consuming and for this reason reliable, economical and yet simple methods are certainly necessary to determine the degree of vulnerability of existing building stock. In this study, rapid visual screening method (RVS) and preliminary method by FEMA 154 and FEMA 310 is used to assess reinforced concrete buildings in Agartala, the capital of north east state Tripura which is situated in seismic zone V as per Indian seismic code. The same buildings are also evaluated by RVS method available in India and the preliminary method proposed by IITK-GSDMA-EQ 06. In preliminary evaluation, the adequacy of the building in shear and overturning has been examined by quick checks. A comparison between the results obtained from the RVS and preliminary evaluation methods are made and finally the most vulnerable buildings are identified after preliminary evaluation and suggested for detailed evaluation in order to take strengthening measure.
