Abstract : In the present paper we present a case of the strengthening of a bridge, which is a part of the taxiway at the Mumbai airport. The Mithi River in Mumbai goes below it. With the increase in plane sizes and tighter safety standards, it was found that the bridge had to be strengthened to meet requirements. The bridge is a multi-cell type structure with a bottom and a top slab in between; the webs were to be strengthened. The only way to reach those webs was to puncture the bottom slab to reach the narrow tunnel like space. It had many technical, operational and safety problems. In this paper, we present the method statement and the efforts to complete the project within time. It also shows that only due to the use of FRP composites it was possible to achieve the required deadline with maintaining the quality and the standard of work.
