Abstract : The paper deals with how to achieve durability in reinforced concrete construction ? a burning issue worldwide. It covers the concept of durability indices, specifically as developed in the South African approach to durability design and specification. The relevant test methods and service life models for use in a performance-based approach to durability design and specifications are described. The paper also gives an example of the practical implementation of this approach in a major infrastructure project. The results from this project indicate that the approach is useful and can quantify as-built variability in the quality of concrete structures.
