Abstract : A brief history and early development of fiber reinforced concrete and shotcrete is presented. This paper includes currently available types and brands of fibers. Emphasis is given to the recent developments in synthetic Fibers and their influence on the properties and performance of Fiber composites. High volume Fiber composites, both steel and synthetic Fiber reinforced concretes, are introducing revolutionary changes in the structural application of concrete. Extensive research has established that the addition of various Fibers in concrete improves the flexural fatigue strength, flexural toughness, impact strength, shock resistance and static flexural strength. The possible future developments in fiber concrete technology, in design procedures and applications are discussed.
