Abstract : In this paper, we propose the goals for evacuation simulations in the context of the fire safety engineering. It is proposed that the safety of a building design should be measured using F-N plots that are based on the fire statistics. A new evacuation code is tested which allows the modelling of ?panic? situations and interaction between evacuation simulation and the state-of-the-art fire simulation. The major features of the new code are described and results are shown. The method presented was found to run satisfactorily, and fast enough for practical purposes. For validation of new evacuation code advanced evacuation analyses were undertaken for an existing passenger vessel in accordance with the IMO (International Maritime Organization) guidelines. For the purpose of this project, both the primary (with full availability of escape routes) and secondary cases (with one stairway unavailable) were evaluated for day and night time scenarios. The vessel is 125 m long and 18 m wide, with a capacity for 500 passengers. This technique can be used as alternative to conventional fire drill.
